Sentinel

Red-Shouldered Hawk

A nesting pair of red-shouldered hawks has been a fixture on our property for years, circling the tree line or perched somewhere out of sight where their distinct call could be heard in the distance. Every once in a while I'd catch a glimpse of this striking bird, hunting or gliding around, and as a nesting pair they were always doing the necessary work to care for their young.

Sentinel grew out of wanting to capture that presence, to hold onto the feeling of something wild keeping watch, being present, and putting in the work. In many cultures, hawks are symbols of clear sight and quiet power, a reminder to pay attention to what's moving around you, and having the presence to act with conviction and precision.

The piece is built from reclaimed steel, sheet metal, bicycle gears, old tools, chain, and whatever other steel could be salvaged along the way, worked into something built to stand the test of time. It rests on a heavy, weighted base, freestanding and fully relocatable, with a cantilevered mount that plays up the dynamic motion of the piece, wherever you choose to place it. A piece like this asks to be lived with through all the elements. Let it keep watch over a place of your own.
